Certification

What is a Weed Warrior?

Weed Warrior is Baltimore City's training and certification for volunteers who remove invasive plants on public land. It covers plant identification, safe removal technique, and the things you must not cut — native lookalikes, and anything that needs a professional.

Do I need it to come along?

No. Anyone can join a work party. Most of what happens at one — hauling, bagging, planting, learning the plants — needs no certification at all, and a first party is a good way to find out whether you want it.

Certification matters for leading a removal. Because this work happens on city public land, the person directing invasive removal has to be a certified Weed Warrior. That is why the signup form asks, and why only certified volunteers can offer to lead.

How do I get certified?

Training is run by the city and its partners, not by us, and the schedule and requirements are theirs to publish. Start here:

Those pages are the authority on what the program currently requires. If anything here disagrees with them, believe them.

Not sure which plants are which? The plant guide has identification photos, lookalike comparisons, and removal notes for everything we work on.
